Exploring how language & eye gazing can influence attention

Guest speaker
Giulia Calignano
Post-Doc in Language Sciences, Developmental Cognition and Methodology & Coordinator at Psicostat, University of Padova
About the webinar
Eye-gaze direction is an effective cue of social attention. But, can language influence this process?
Through gaze-cueing experiments, find out how Giulia Calignano gained insights into human communication dynamics and the role of language in shaping attention.
You’ll learn about:
- Extending experimental psychology beyond the lab.
- Reaching larger, diverse samples to enhance research validity.
- Combining advanced measurement tools with robust participant recruitment for high-impact research.

About the speaker
Giulia Calignano investigates language processing and attention deployment in infants, children and adults by means of pupillometry, eye-tracking and EEG using Nonlinear regression modelling and by adopting the Multiverse approach to data analysis.
Eye-gaze direction is an effective cue of social attention. But, can language influence this process? Through gaze-cueing experiments, where participants should find a relevant target while the identity of another person moves their gaze towards or away the relevant target , we gain insights into human communication dynamics and the role of language in shaping attention. The study suggests that faces linked to a foreign language didn't trigger typical gaze-following effects. Implicitly categorizing faces based on language identity likely influence our social interactions and our attention.
